The health disparities faced by Black pregnant women in the United States are alarming. Black mothers are more than three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to their white counterparts. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need to address the systemic issues that contribute to these disparities, such as limited access to quality care, biased treatment, and the consequences of structural racism. Improving Black maternal health begins with listening—listening to the experiences, needs, and concerns of Black mothers.

Understanding the Black Maternal Health Crisis

The maternal mortality rate for Black women is a stark reflection of the inequities in the U.S. healthcare system. Despite advancements in medical care, Black women continue to face disproportionately high risks during pregnancy and childbirth. These disparities are rooted in a complex interplay of factors, including socioeconomic status, geographic location, and the historical impact of racism within the healthcare system. The combination of these elements often results in Black mothers receiving lower-quality care, experiencing bias from healthcare providers, and enduring the stress of navigating a system that doesn’t fully support their needs.

According to the CDC, Black women are 3.2 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Additionally, Black women are more likely to suffer from severe maternal morbidity, which includes life-threatening complications during childbirth. These statistics are not just numbers—they represent the lived experiences of countless Black mothers who have been failed by the healthcare system. Addressing these disparities requires a multifaceted approach, starting with listening to the voices of those most affected.

The Mommy Listening Tour: Elevating Voices, Building Support

In response to the Black maternal health crisis, NOWINCLUDED is sponsoring the Black Maternal Health Expo and bringing The Mommy Listening Tour, an initiative designed to elevate the voices of Black mothers. The Mommy Listening Tour is an interactive experience that allows Black moms to share their health stories in a safe and supportive environment. By providing a platform for these stories, NOWINCLUDED aims to amplify the voices of Black mothers and advocate for the changes needed to improve maternal healthcare.

At the expo, attendees can expect to find a dedicated area for The Mommy Listening Tour, complete with a video station where moms can sit down and record a video about their experiences with pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. This space is designed to be a judgment-free zone where Black mothers can speak candidly about their challenges, triumphs, and what they need from the healthcare system to feel truly supported. These videos will be shared with the NOWINCLUDED community to raise awareness and drive meaningful conversations around Black maternal health.

Insights from The Mommy Listening Tour: What We’re Learning

The insights gained from The Mommy Listening Tour are invaluable in understanding the unique challenges Black mothers face in the healthcare system. Here are some key themes that have emerged from the stories shared so far:

  1. Assumptions and Stereotypes: Many participants reported that healthcare providers made assumptions about them based on their race, rather than treating them as individuals. A common and dangerous stereotype is that Black women have a higher pain tolerance, leading to inadequate pain management and poorer overall care.
  2. The Importance of Representation: Most women expressed that they felt more comfortable and trusting when their healthcare providers looked like them and understood their cultural experiences. These providers were more likely to listen attentively, communicate effectively, and provide care that felt personalized and respectful.
  3. Fear and Anxiety: The awareness of the higher maternal mortality rate among Black women has created a pervasive sense of fear and anxiety, especially during labor and delivery. Many mothers shared that they took extra precautions, such as attending all prenatal appointments, eating healthily, and educating themselves, to avoid becoming another statistic.

NOWINCLUDED is committed to turning these insights into action by amplifying the voices of Black moms on the NOWINCLUDED platform. By sharing these stories, they hope to foster a deeper understanding of the systemic issues that contribute to Black maternal health disparities and advocate for the changes needed to ensure that all mothers receive the care they deserve.
