Black Elephant Designs

Like any smart entrepreneur, Brittiany Hubbard started her company to fill a need she felt wasn’t being met by other businesses. There weren’t enough trendy maternity clothes out there that would look great during and after pregnancy. So, in 2017 she launched Black Elephant Designs. Based in Lilburn, Georgia, Black Elephant Designs is available for everyone online.

“What makes our garments unique and special is that you can wear them during pregnancy and after,” Brittiany says. “We want our clothes to remain timeless.”

Black Elephant Designs offers both ready-to-wear and custom maternity clothing.

Popular Products at Black Elephant Designs

The Velvet “Sarah” Dress is great for maternity photoshoots and for holiday parties.

One of Brittiany’s most popular products is the Velvet “Sarah” Dress, which she says is perfect for maternity photoshoots and holiday season. Her headwraps are popular, too.

“With women being in quarantine and salons being closed, we have seen a boost in sales with our headwraps,” she says.

Before the COVID-19 crisis, Brittiany had plans of expanding her business through expos. Earlier this year, she’d attended The Prego Expo.

“That was truly an exciting moment for our company,” she says. “Needless to say, we are bummed that we will not be able to do expos for a while. But in the meantime, we will continue to create and add new items to our website, which our customers have been taking full advantage of.”

The Story Behind the Name “Black Elephant Designs”

Headwraps are quite popular with Black Elephant Designs customers.

“When I was pregnant with my son I was obsessed with elephants,” Brittiany says, “their grandeur, maternal instincts, regalness,  and how they support one another when it comes to their children.”

She also wanted to celebrate the color black.

“One day I was driving down the street and I noticed a company named White Owl and I thought to myself  ‘Why does it have to be white? Why can’t it be black?'” Brittany explains.  “To me, black is the inclusion of all colors, and so I put the two together.”

Balancing Business and Baby

Brittiany Hubbard dreams of one day selling her headwraps, dresses and other garments from an elegant showroom.

In the future, Brittiany plans to upgrade her home-based business. She wants to open a showroom that customers can visit by appointment for a one-on-one shopping experience.

Meanwhile, Brittiany will continue growing her business online while also being mom to her 6-year-old son.

“Being a full-time mother as well as a full-time entrepreneur is definitely a balancing act, especially since I homeschool my son,” Brittiany says.

Having a schedule helps, she says. Having friends and family members eager to help out with her son and with the business is great, too.

“My biggest supporters have been my family and my network of friends that are in the design business,” Brittiany says. “My family especially has been great supporting me as a mompreneur.”
